ive been a huge turner fan since 96 when i randomly picked up witchblade #1 when scanning the racks at the shop.

anyhow skip forward to 2000 when the announcement was made that turner was working with james cameron on doing the fathom movie. awesome right but then about 3 or 4 years ago cameron decides to back out of the production of it. skip ahead to 2009 what movie comes out AVATAR. this movie bears too many similarity's to fathom for my liking. coming out of the theatre tonight i felt disgusted, feeling like cameron scammed Mike and took his story and changed it around enough so it was no longer fathom in essence so he could make billions.

If mike were still alive how would he be feeling, personally it would be a feeling of disgust. Does anyone else feel this way

cameron's openly said several times he's had this idea in his head for about 15 years, with concepts and designs dating almost that far back.
As far as a comparison to Fathom, I think avatar fits much closer to ekos in terms of look, while the story does fit the aspen idea a little better (stranger is dropped into a new world where they discover things about themselves).
I'm pretty sure if mike saw this though he would've enjoyed it, especially seeing as how close it is to ekos (inspiration would be abundant). That being said I never met Mike but from what I've heard disgust was something that he didn't seem to be able to generate towards anything.

Dear Trimcat et al,

I can confidently say, Michael would have loved Avatar.

In regards to your other points, some things that should be said here. Just because a project is at James Cameron's company, Lightstorm, doesn't mean Mr. Cameron dealt with it first hand. Lightstorm is a fairly decently sized company and has many scripts under it's development umbrella. Lightstorm did not 'back out' as implied. The option to develop it was not renewed as the property was not moving in a direction both parties were happy with.

The base story of Avatar, in broad strokes, is a very old story and a very common one. It can hardly be construed as stolen from Fathom. In Exodus, Moses left the comfortable world he was familiar with and walked among strange people learning valuable lessons of life before returning to become a savior of his own tribe and led his own and the new people to a new life, free of oppression. I am not saying that either Avatar or Fathom was plagiarized from the Bible, but the story concept is familiar to our human experience and has been told many times over in our history.

Sincerely,
Peter Steigerwald.

no worries, my understanding was camerons company backed out. and i guess i got my info mixed up.

as for the story being very old yes i do agree as its been told many times before. hopefully avatar is just a stepping stone for a even better movie. being one with the ones from the deep
