Hola chicos y chicas!
Welcome to the Monthly Challenge!
Kymaera and Wildcat and I are bringing you new challenges The idea behind this is the same as the weekly challenge: to get people drawing and drawing things they would not normally. As with the weekly challenge this is community supported. You will be asked to critique and discuss your works and the works of others, but this will be a little more structured.
The intent of the monthly challenge is to illicit improvement. Works placed here will be looked at more closely and if corrections/changes may be asked for. Participation is voluntary. You can participate one month and not another OR you can treat it like school and make a point to participate every month.
The point is to help each other get better.
On the first of each month I will select three topics: EASY, MEDIUM, HARD. You will have one month to do any one of the topics or all three. The deadline is always 11:59 p.m. PST on the final day of that month.
If you're just starting out, do the EASY one. If you're ready for more try the MEDIUM. And when you think you're ready, the HARD topic. Doing all three will always benefit you, as it will hone your skills.
While works are generally expected to be in black and white, color is acceptable. All works should be done solely by you. You will be critiqued on the merits of your own work not in comparison to others. The critique period begins on the 15th of the current month and continues through the 15th of the following month.
Thumbnails, layouts and drafts of any of the topics are certainly welcome to be posted for critiques, discussion or suggestions. Just be sure you allow yourself time to be done by the deadline. A good idea is to have yourself an 'approved' or critiqued rough draft/layout by the 15th and a final by the end of the month.
[Due to the fact that today is already the 16th of November, we will have simpler topics for this month and begin in earnest in December.]
November 2008 Monthly Challenge 1
Your deadline is 11:59 p.m. PST Sunday, November 30th.
The critique period for November 08 entries has begun.
EASY
Draw a dynamic shape.
A dynamic shape is something that creates movement for the viewer
and it should be as simple as is necessary to create such a feeling.
It is a shape not a line.
MEDIUM
Draw Supergirl playing with Krypto.
Both of the DCU: any incarnations are applicable.
HARD
Draw the following Establishing Shot:
1969 A lounge bar. Décor should be sixties 'go-go' pop. The room has several 'hip' looking patrons sitting amongst the plastic furniture, shag carpets, bead strings, colored lights and lava lamps. On stage is the all girl group "Sally Jive and the Shake-Fives", miniskirts, go-go boots big earrings, bandanas, fringes—the whole bag. Hawk Roberts, a gruff looking, well built man in an old army jacket, boots and jeans is at the bar speaking to the bartender. He looks entirely out of place in this environment. The bartender, Jerome Washington, is a black man, stylish in his loose purple shirt and well coiffed afro. He eyes Hawk with suspicion... he doesn't belong here.

Very cool I like the idea. I'm in. So is this room only for posting the art, or can we converse about the challenges in here too?

Well I read this and i thought it was a cool idea. I never read any of the art room forum pages simply because I dont draw, but i do appreciate it. Since comic book artists are an inspiration in my life, i thought id give it a try. Hopefully i came make this a monthly occurance and all of you can make me better. This is my first time really drawing. I doodle a little here and there, but thats about it. Im more of a computer type person rather than grabbing the old paper and pencil. But I thought I would go with the SUpergirl drawing. I dont have a scanner so i took a photo, it not the best but any comments would be helpful. Thanks in advance. & thanks Peter for the ideas.

It looks like the drawing you mentioned, because I got the idea from that picture. Like I said I dont draw very often, and thought Id try to get some ideas and draw a supergirl instead of a WW.
