Been swamped.
november's challenges extend until dec 30 and we'll begin on schedule on jan 1.
In the mean time... there's lots to critique and I don't see anyone trying their hand at the hard one. |

Yeah, I wanted to, got started, and had a couple other things that were a little more pressing to finish. So, I'll get the medium and hard up as soon as I can. I could stand a little crit.

Unfortunately, I just read about this challenge today. Day late, dollar short, I'm short. I hope to hop on to the next challenge and quit lurking. This looks like fun. ^_^

OKie, Feliz Ano Nuevo y'all.
Looking forward to reading the critiques of last month's challenges.
• Draw a Dynamic Shape
• Draw Supergirl playing with Krypto.
• Draw the following Establishing Shot
Here is what I have to say.
Superduckman: Interesting choice of shot for the medium challenge. But I'd like to hear your reasons why you chose to frame this as you have. Krypto is central and well shown, but Supergirl is barely in the composition. This makes the piece a drawing of Krypto, not Krypto with Supergirl. Let us know your reasons.
AspenAddiction: Nice work. When learning and strating out it is ABSOLUTELY fine to borrow inspiration and even pieces of works from others who have gone before. But in a hypercritical community such as the comic one, it is best to declare the source. It's not wrong to learn by redrawing, but one should never pass it off as their own original composition. There's no shame in tracing or copying to learn.
I am curious as to why you left out some details such as the scrolled ends of Krypto's cape, but kept his santa hat. Work hard on your women's faces and capturing the details of the piece you're copying from. And don't forget, Supergirl has a cape too.
Kymaera: Sorry I didn't get back to you in time for you to start these. It is a little difficult to discern what is what in your sketches. But it looks like 2 seems to be the best so far. In a situation like this where there is so much going on, be careful of extraneous details, like the large amount of perspectived bar in 2. That much bar gives a lot of dead space and an odd angel for the scene. Separate your goals, break down the scene into what is important for the reader to see. Since you don't have more of the script for context, you'll have to make the judgement call. Is the band more important, the room, or the two talking at the bar. then you thumbnail from there. But you have to start with the important thing. and structure around that.
In the case of your dynamic shapes, you're getting too complicated. Complication is the death of dynamicism. to be dynamic it should be simple. A triangle, a parallelogram, the Nike swoosh, these are all dynamic shapes at their simplest. By adding a representational third-dimension, you're making an 'object' not a 'shape'. Dynamic implies forceful direction. it should carry the viewer with it. A lot of your sketchlings have 'movement' but that movement goes in many directions, swirling, splashing, twisting. To be 'dynamic movement' rather than 'movement' you have to pick a direction for that force. The curvilinear triangle between 6 and 7 is the closest thing you've got.
Beachbead: Very nicely drawn, But how is Supergirl playing with Krypto? Remember the subject you're being asked for. There's a big difference between 'Supergirl with Krypto' and 'Supergirl playing with Krypto'....And I think Krypto is white.

Hola chicos y chicas!
January 2009 Monthly Challenge 2
Your deadline is 11:59 p.m. PST Saturday, January 31st.
The critique period for November/December 08 entries has begun.
EASY
Draw a tree.
The tree here is the point. Don't include any distractions. Focus all effort and attention on the tree.
MEDIUM
Draw a full length picture of George Washington.
For you USAmericans... he's the guy on your dollar bill. Head to toe...or rather his wig to his buckled shoes. Sitting or standing petting a unicorn, whatever, but we have to see his whole body.
HARD
Draw the following pages:
Alysha and Becka have gone shopping. Two typical teenagers, we see them in a boutique picking out clothes.
Page 1
panel 1: medium shot, establishing the boutique. Alysha is in the foreground sorting through the racks and Becka is off to the side doing the same.
(I'll include dialogue, but it's not necessary to letter it, it just to help with context.)
Alysha: "So did Mauricio say where he was going to take you tomorrow?"
Becka: "To his aunt's restaurant. He said it's very special for him."
panel 2: Close in on Alysha with an eyebrow raised. An outfit in her hand as she pauses to turn back toward Becka.
Alysha: "You're not worried girl? Meeting his family like that on a first date?"
panel 3: Becka holding up an outfit for inspection. She's not looking at Alysha.
Becka: "I little, I don't know, he's kinda old-school. I thought it was nice."
panel 4: Close in on Becka as she turns to face Alysha.
Becka: "Should I be worried?"
panel 5: Alysha stands there mildly surprised and incredulous.
Alysha: "Yeah, girl. I'd be trippin' 'fit was me. It's not like you're meeting his parents and jettin' out. His aunt's gonna be looking you over, watching table manners, everything...gettin' inspected at dinner is usually a fourth or fifth date thing."
---
Page 2
panel 1: Close in on Becka, her face scrunched in realization.
Becka: "ugh."
Becka: "I guess this trip just turned serious. We'd better find just the right outfit!"
panel 2: Alysha puts her hand on Becka's shoulder, She smiling broadly,
Alysha: "I am on it girl!"
panel 3-10?
alternating panels of Becka in outfits and Alysha's reactions. Go crazy, the girls start out semi-serious then start getting crazy. One shot of Becka stepping out of a drewssing room or in front of a mirror and the other of Alysha or both of them laughing, or disgusted or playful. How ever many panels you want to cram in here.
---
Page 3
panel 1: Becka backs out of the dressing room, knee high boots and a long trench coat. She's facing away from Alysha and the whole store. she looking toward the dressing rooms.
Becka: "Whadda y'think...will his aunt like..."
panel 2: Becka turns around quickly, her coat flaring as she whips it open. 'flashing' Alysha She's wearing a zip-up corset top that doesn't cover her stomach a too-short skirt that you can see her underwear through (her underwear shouldn't be too-slutty). It's more funny whorish than actually whorish.
Becka: "...THIS ONE?!"
panel 3: Super-close on Becka's face as she turns bright red from embarrassment. her mouth is wide open.
Becka: "eek!"
panel 4: Make this shot wide enough to see everything. Alysha's slipped off her chair having a fit of the giggles. there should be several of the former outfits on a chair(s) next to Alysha. Becka's wrapped herself up in her coat and ducked/rushed back into the changing room and behind Alysha we can see handsome Mauricio shopping with his aunt. they are both facing us (Becka), they saw the whole thing.
panel 5: down shot of Alysha on the floor looking back behind her at Muricio and his aunt, her laughter going away. but her eyes still twinkling. She's waving weakly.
Alysha: "woah...oops."
Alysha: "uh...Hey, Mauricio."
panel 6: close up of Becka her eyes wide, her arms clutching the coat around her. she's huddled in the back of the changing room, we can see some of the room be hind her. let's make this panel as dim/dark/backlit? as possible to show her mortification.
Becka caption: "oh, crap."

Quick question... Showing her mrotification of what, splitting her pants, the banana monster maybe, can I totally use my full imagination for this one? Maybe not I'll keep it within lines of appropriate. ;)

uh... mortified at being in an embarrassing outfit in front of mauricio and his aunt after asking if his aunt would like "this one".
She just made a dork of herself in front of him and his old-fashioned aunt that she is going to have to see tomorrow on her date...if there still will be one.

Um, ok. I think I lost literacy for a minute. Yeah, yeah, I'm good now. *Also mortified and blushing with embarassment.*

It's ok, I forgot my literacy today too and I couldn't read your post where you screwed up so I didn't know you did.
